It's going to be interesting as to how the situations with Sandow, and Segeyaro too, pan out. I'm not sure whether SL/RFL registration would be recognized by the NRL clubs, and if they are then I can't see any NRL clubs paying a transfer fee. I think it's pointless and petty for Wire and/or Leeds to insist on keeping a hold of their registrations until their contracts expire. But at the same time, some sort of message has to be sent that players can't just walk out because the exchange rate makes their wages so much less that they expected, the weather is a bit chilly or the catch-all 'homesick' excuse.

If nothing is done about registration the door will be wide open for Union to poach the best players. NRL will pale into comparison.

Well there is an upside to all this. Over the last 12 months, for some reason or other, the pound has dropped by around 20-25 % against the Euro and US dollar (although it's doing very well against the Zimbabwean currency, which I think is called the dried elephant turd). But anyway, it's also dropped by the same amount against the Aussie dollar. Hence Aussie stars will soon be completely out of reach for RL clubs and we will not have to worry about contract problems at all.
..... course that does mean our better players are dirt cheap for the NRL so we may lose a few more, but it will allow some of our past academy players like Danny Bridge, Glen Riley, Ryan Shaw etc a chance to play SL. And of course it would be great to welcome the likes of Jordan Cox and Anthony England back again. If it wasn't for the contract problems, we might even have asked Roy Asotasi to ......, no I think perhaps that really is going a bit far.

The whole situation is not great and realistically going forward the club's need to try and take these scenarios in future contracts when being negotiated. Both wire n Leeds should take any offer for them to draw a line under it.

I wonder if Sale have got the backing of the RU on this one? If so their friends in high places could spell real problems for the future of RL...but I suppose there's nothing new in that.

You're a bit out of date there friend. I think you will find the drop in the pound is now considerably less. |
