Leigh Centurions are pleased to announce that their first pre-season Warm Up game of the 2016 season will be a Battle of the Borough against old rivals Wigan Warriors. The eagerly awaited first game of the new season will take place at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday 17 January 2016 with a 3pm kick-off.
Last season's game was a thrilling encounter and featured a Liam Kay hat-trick in Leigh Centurions' memorable 18-14 victory at LSV.
Leigh Centurions Head of Rugby Derek Beaumont said: “It is always our first intention to arrange a friendly with Wigan Warriors and I am delighted that has been possible again for 2016. We can continue our "Battle of the Borough" and look to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the game.
"We have consistently seen Wigan produce endless talent which in the past some have mistakenly referred to as reserve sides. Their strength in depth is outstanding and the way George Williams completed the season culminating in representing his country in the test series is testament to that.
"We were encouraged by our good start to last season with good performances in the Warm Up Games and I am sure Rolls will aim to get a good look at how our new recruits settle into our structures and gel as a team. We have a much smaller squad this season so it is a great opportunity for our fans to get their first opportunity to see our new signings in a Leigh Centurions Jersey. I am sure Harrison Hansen in particular will receive a warm welcome from both sets of fans.
"This tie was the record attendance for the LSV featuring a Leigh side until the Bradford fixture at the start of last season and it would be great if we could get the support to reverse that record back to one that represents the Battle of the Borough. Shaun Wane always represents Wigan with a tough, uncompromising team and it will be a tough start to our campaign but one I know the lads will look forward to as much as the spectators.
"I would like to thank Kris Radlinski for his assistance in arranging this fixture. He represents Wigan Warriors in an excellent manner and it is always a pleasure to conduct business with him. I would also like to thank Ian Lenagan for agreeing to it and continuing a fixture which I believe can grow into something in the future as Leigh Centurions continue to progress as a club."
Wigan Warriors supporters have been allocated the South Stand at Leigh Sports Village with Leigh Centurions fans occupying the North and West stands.
Prices for the game have been agreed and are as follows (season tickets are not valid for this fixture):
